Nikon Coolpix S9700 vs. Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX50V – Performance and Appearance Test of Two Promising Compact Cameras

The Nikon Coolpix S9700 launched in February 2014 is a compact camera with ½.3” sensor.

Another camera that features similar basic configuration is the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX50V, which first released in April 2013. The two compact cameras have performed well in the market for months and persist to be promising to prospective buyers. So if you are looking for a branded, ½.3” compact camera, which one of the two promising devices should you buy? Let’s find out.

Sensor

The Nikon S9700 features a BSI-CMOS sensor with 16 MP resolution. It has the minimum light sensitivity of 125 ISO and maximum exposure of 6,400 ISO. On the other hand, the HX50V is a 20 MP, BSI-CMOS sensor type camera. The minimum and the maximum light sensitivity of this device are 100 ISO and 12,800 ISO respectively.

Hence, the Sony camera offers 25% more pixels and minimum light sensitivity than its competitor. On the other hand, the Coolpix device provides 100% more maximum light sensitivity. Apart from this, both the cameras cover an area of 28.07mm2 and do not support RAW format. Overall, the Nikon device provides an edge to the users because of the higher resolution.

Lens

The Nikon S9700 has the wide angle 25 mm and telephoto of 750 mm. In comparison, the same for the Sony HX50V measures 24 mm and 720 mm respectively. Apart from this, the wide angle aperture of the Nikon device and the HX50V is f/3.7 and f/3.5 respectively. Alternatively, the telephoto aperture of the S9700 and its competitor is f/6.4 and f/6.3 respectively. Hence, the Nikon device has 30 mm longer reach, whereas the Sony HX50V performs faster at the tele end.

Display

The Nikon device has the dimensions of 110 x 64 x 35 mm, in comparison to Cyber-Shot’s 108 x 64 x 38 mm. This means that the S9700 is 2 mm larger, but 3 mm thinner than the Sony HX50V. When it comes to weight, the Nikon device weighs 232 g, whereas the Sony device hits the scales at 272 g. Hence, the Coolpix S9700 is sleeker and lighter of the two devices.

Overall, the two devices have closely related features and specifications. However, with themore powerful sensor and lighter model, the Nikon Coolpix S9700 gives users an edge over the Sony Cyber-Shot HX50V.
